On a personal note - my own undergraduate project was a review of
percolation which set me up for my research life. When I enrolled for a Ph.D.
I asked for a research project on percolation but my supervisor
Jaan Oitmaa pointed out I then knew more about it than anyone else in the
department. So I had to settle for Heisenberg models (also a phase transition)
spent ever since trying to get back to percolation. I admit to having given
several spinglass projects to students wanting machine learning.
Choosing the correct level non-trivial.
At upper left, Livnat's percolation project -
beautiful example of all the project requirements,
more details if time permits. Lower left - my percolation project -
obviously non-electronic in 1974, presentation with projector slides.
