ANNEALING LIQUID CRYSTALS with COLLOIDS
Annealing means a slow cool with occasional rises of temperature to escape local minima.
The opposite is quenching - freezing ``as is'', with lots of small regions (domains) of local order.
The heuristic energy graph at left has both local and global minima, and a local temperature rise is needed to escape the local minima.
The liquid crystal molecules are represented by blue rods and the colloids by red spheres/stars.
The stars are built out of rod objects and have the advantage of being ``transparent''. This was Priel/Oshri's original idea.
